Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Song combos that shoud have been tried and would have worked

I am approaching this topic from a musical stand point- what would work musically in that the transitions, to my ears and imagination, would have worked. WE all would love to have seem certain pairings- even the boys gave it the college try a few times with Scarlet-touch-fire and a few others (I seem to remember a Music Never Stopped sandwich)-

Well I was listening the other day to the transtion out of China Cat and imagined it going into.........Fire on the Mountain- It did not seem to me to be a big leap to take- now there could have been a tempo issue- yes I agree- but there are some slower tempo China Cats out there and this could have worked-

The other side of this equation could be Scarlet Begonias into I know you rider- as far as I know these two things never happened- but couldn't they have?

Perhaps you heard a "goeszinta" that happened only once that you wished would have continued- or, like me, you were listening one day to a common combo and another song in the songbook entered your head?

Maybe someone could "rig" this by using I-tunes and options for "gapless" recording to see if it could work....maybe that someone could be me? I will let you'all know

A couple of potential segues that would have made unpopular songs sound really good:

Victim > Spanish Jam > Way To Go Home

Wave To the Wind > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower

I would love love LOVE to have heard them try:

Fire On the Mountain>Scarlet Begonias.

I mean, think about it, they do the refrain of Scarlet at the END of every Scarlet>Fire anyway! They could have started with FIRE and then hit the SCARLET refrain, and instead of ending it there, Jerry goes "As I was walkin round Grovernor's Square..." Place would have gone absolutely freaking bonkers!!!!

Doesn't one of the early Dick's Picks (they one from Pembroke Pines) have a Terrapin>Dew on it? I think maybe the Terrapin just starts at the "Inspiration..." line, but I can't recall for sure.

Sometimes I really enjoy when they pop into a fast tune out of something spacey, like the MNS>Sugaree>MNS or a Playin>Bertha.

1984: Truckin>Sugaree>Truckin to open the show- when Jerry is doing that build up the end before they drop those synconized bombs he could slowly transist into sugaree. Even sounds like it's in the same key. And then after Sugaree they go back and continue with the end of truckin' build and finish with those big bombs.

1985: How about Aiko>Samson - would have been cool to hear the drummers switch from the Aiko beat to the Samson intro (edit: holy crap they did do this one in '85, 6/24. But it was no good because they actually stopped at the end of Aiko. They should have just charged in Aiko)

1982: Shakedown>Cumberland - Right in the middle of the jam Jerry would start pickin the beginning of cumberland. He wouldn't even have time to switch his guitar out of the 'wah wah' mode for the first couple riffs.

I'd even take a Truckin'>Bertha show opener too.

Some other classics they did do: Scarlet>Eyes ('85) Music never stopped>Sugaree>Music never Stopped ('82 + '94) Also, Shakedown>Samson ('85), Cold Rain>Samson ('82) Playin>Bertha ('81), Shakedown>Bertha ('79), Playin>Shakedown ('82), Playin>Aiko ('82), Half Step>Rider ('85), China Cat>Crazy Fingers>Rider ('88), Playin>Rider ('89)

I think a Bird Song>Scarlet>Fire might actually work. Although, after thinking about it Eyes>Scarlet>Fire>Eyes or Scarlet>Eyes>Fire might have actually been pretty good.

how about one of the "cowboy songs"..eg.. Mexical or El Paso going into a jam into GDTRFB? My country background lets me think they could have stretched one of these type songs out on occasion just by surprise & ended a show that way?

I also love the early Touch of Greys, that tempo lent itself to many possible jams.

I would have really enjoyed a
Mountains of the Moon> Terrapin> So Many Roads
or a...
St. Stephen> Sugaree, opener would have been nice.

Day Job>Dark Star>What's Become of the Baby>Dark Star>Day Job

(Sorry could resist- I'm actually one of those who doesn't think Day Job was the seventh sign or anything...)

Nothin' like some good intro's and outro's. Least that's what the wife says. Sorry, didn't mean to drag this down into the gutter, but I was lonely down here.
Dire, hope your New Years was both entertaining and memorable. I spent mine in a brew pub watching my bro's band play. Good beer + good music + good people = good fun.

my SO says the same thing ;) no if's and's or buts about it :)

our new year's was pretty quiet this year - stayed in instead of partying - left a neighborhood party early and just watched a movie - were asleep by 12:30. a little different than the norm, but lots of stress and tiredness with the death of our good friend's mom a couple of days ago - we needed some rest.

on the good side of things - my SO is chomping at the bit for me to burn her the Roy Haynes - she LOVES IT!!! it is real sweet man! Hope your New Years was great -= sounds like you had real good time - very cool!! happy 2007 my friend :)
